Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that typically causes symptoms similar to the common cold. Common symptoms include cough, fever, nasal congestion, runny nose, and sore throat. In more severe cases, individuals may experience wheezing, shortness of breath, and complications such as bronchiolitis or pneumonia, particularly in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
Recently, there have been reports suggesting an increase in HMPV infections in China, especially among individuals under the age of 14 in northern provinces. However, Chinese authorities and the World Health Organization have found no evidence of a large-scale outbreak. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that the current rise in respiratory infections is typical for the winter season and less severe compared to the previous year. She assured that it is safe to travel in China.
Infection with HMPV can cause symptoms that are comparable to those of other respiratory viruses, such as:
- Cough
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Sneezing
- Fever
- Sore throat
- Difficulty breathing
People who have chronic lung conditions like COPD, asthma, or pulmonary fibrosis should constantly take preventative measures to guard against infections like hMPV, influenza, and other dangerous diseases.
